Acquisition: Our Lady of the Flowers at Grace Cathedral

On Saturday March 11th, 2023, the landmark Grace Cathedral of San Francisco acquired David LaChapelle’s Our Lady of the Flowers (2018). The large-scale photographic work is now part of the church’s rich permanent collection which includes pieces by Keith Haring, Ansel Adams, and others.

Our Lady of the Flowers hangs in the transept of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral.

Altar Piece, 1990, Keith Haring, White gold patina on bronze, 60 x 80 x 2 in, ©Keith Haring Foundation is on view in the memorial AIDS chapel within Grace Cathedral.

On Sunday March 12th, Rev. Dr. Malcom Clemens Young invited David participate in a conversation as part of the Cathedral's ongoing forum series. You can watch the conversation in the link below:

Seeing Our Lady of the Flowers placed in such a powerful space like Grace Cathedral really hit deep. There’s something about mixing raw beauty with sacred architecture that stays with you. That kind of intentionality reminded me of what I found learning how to cook chorizo the right way—when you care about the details, the end result speaks for itself. That guide gave me exactly what I needed, and just like LaChapelle’s work, it sticks with you long after the first experience.
