Deodato Gallery, Via Giulia 122, Rome
Public Vernissage: 27 October - 6.30 pm – ARTIST PRESENT

From 27 October, David LaChapelle's new exhibition with the new "Stations of the Cross" series opens to the public exclusively for the Deodato Arte Gallery in via Giulia 122 in Rome, which will be presented during the Florence Biennale on the occasion of the Lifetime Achievement Award awarded to the American photographer.
The exhibition, which will be inaugurated by LaChapelle himself on October 27, presents surprising new works, fifteen scenes of the Via Crucis arranged along a path that symbolizes Christ's journey towards the Crucifixion and which the artist interpreted taking inspiration from various examples, from medieval to postmodern eras, imagining the traditional religious narrative in a new, colorful and poetic way. With his unique style and composition, LaChapelle presents the Italian rapper and actor Tedua in the guise of Christ, for whom the photographer signed the covers of the albums “Purgatorio” and “Inferno”; Theatrical elements together with symbolic figures transport the devotional practice, in which the spectator visits each station praying, into the present time.
On display and in conversation with the Via Crucis, in addition to several works from several already known series in his portfolio, LaChapelle exhibits Earth Laughs in Flowers, the series created between 2008 and 2011 inspired by traditional Dutch vanitas, depictions of symbolic objects that they make us reflect on the vanity of earthly conquests and pleasures; as always, even in his ten vanitas LaChapelle mixes humor and drama together with everyday objects, to remind the viewer of his own mortality.

“We are happy to welcome David LaChapelle for this occasion – explains Deodato Salafia – it is his first exhibition at our headquarters in Rome, after the exhibition of classical works at Deodato Milan last autumn. Once again LaChapelle, who has already dealt with subjects linked to the Catholic tradition, such as the Annunciation, surprises us with the choice of an unexpected theme which I am sure Roman visitors will appreciate".
