Over 50 works by American photographer David LaChapelle will be on view at the Benton Museum from September 05 - December 15, 2024. The survey, curated by museum director Nancy Stula, PhD. includes some of LaChapelle's most iconic works, portraits and videos, in addition to the premiere of a new large-scale work.
Artist David LaChapelle is one of the most published photographers in the world. His mastery of color, unique
compositions, and imaginative narratives challenge the genre of photography.
Born in Hartford, LaChapelle grew up in Connecticut before enrolling in North Carolina School of the Arts.
Upon moving to New York, LaChapelle was offered a job from Andy Warhol at Interview Magazine. His
unconventional and often surreal portraits quickly gained international interest. LaChapelle’s images of Madonna,
Tupac, Eminem, Britney Spears, Travis Scott, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse to name a few, have become
archetypes of America in the 21st Century.
Over the past four decades, LaChapelle’s staged tableau, portrait, still life and film works have been exhibited in
galleries and museums around the world. He often references art history, popular culture and the world we live in
today.
