Group Exhibition: Once Upon a Time...Today

Coming to Vienna, the group exhibition, "Once Upon a Time...Today" will be on view from June 01 - July 15, 2023 at Villa Mautner Jäger, Landstraßer Hauptstraße 140-142, 1030 Wien, Austria.
A small selection of recent works by David will be featured in the exhibition along with works by Theo Altenberg, Herbert Brandl, Tony Cragg, Francesco Clemente, Georg Dokoupil, Kerstin Grimm, Leiko Ikemura, Martha Jungwirth, Hans Kupelwieser, Haralampi G. Oroschakoff, Arne Quinze, Arnulf Rainer, Julian Schnabel and Erwin Wurm.
The exhibition is curated by Reiner Opoku and Dr. Ema Kaiser.

The group exhibition "Once upon a time.... today" takes place in the impressive rooms of the Villa Mautner-Jäger. The architecture of the building reflects the cultural heritage of the Viennese Belle Époche, of which the villa is an example. Its architect, Franz von Neumann, believed that past forms must be consistently developed to articulate architecture with contemporary forms. This idea is also followed by the curatorial line of "Once upon a time.... today".
Inspired by the extraordinary construction and the morbid charm of the interiors of the exhibition venue, the show revives the salon era of the 19th century. The selection of works focuses primarily on the genre of painting in its various facets. The participating artists share an international reputation. Many of them established themselves in the 1980s by responding to the then-newly awakened "hunger for images" with completely new subjects and painting styles. © Charlotte Desaga

The curatorial angle about “consistently developing past forms” makes a lot of sense in a space like this — Vienna really rewards that kind of slow looking. I’m also into how the lineup spans very different energies; it’ll be interesting to see whether the villa pushes everything toward a salon-style conversation or if some works resist that. Randomly, planning a trip always turns into thinking about what to pack, and I ended up browsing StyleLookLab while reading this to sanity-check outfits for museum days versus evening stuff. Would be cool to hear which rooms in the villa end up being the most memorable.
Villa Mautner-Jäger looks like the kind of space where you walk in and instantly start comparing every piece to the room it’s hanging in — that “morbid charm” line is dead-on. The mix of big names from different lanes makes me wonder if the show reads cohesive or more like a series of mini encounters. Side thought: a friend just sent me one of those little ghibli ai portraits, and it’s funny how strong “atmosphere” can be even when the image is totally stylized — kind of the same reason this venue choice matters. I’d love to see a few installation shots beyond the exterior.
The idea of staging this in a Belle Époque villa feels perfect for a show that’s literally about past forms meeting the present — those interiors already do half the curating. I always end up double-checking dates for stuff like this when friends are traveling, so I weirdly had est to cst open while reading and thinking about timing a Vienna visit with other plans. The artist list is stacked, and I’m curious how the salon-era vibe changes the way the newer works read.
